Healthy bodies at work – Ergonomic Designs
Ergonomic thinking is not a new or modern approach to health and safety at work. There is proof that ergonomics were used as long ago as 5th Century BC in the time of Ancient Greece. The Grecians used ergonomics when making and using tools in working environments. Ergonomics, in layman’s terms, is using science and the understanding of the human body to improve working environments. Today’s ergonomics is an in-depth topic, affecting all people in life situations such as work, sport and leisure. Here, we discuss some basic and useful ergonomic solutions for computer users to avoid RSI (repetitive strain injury) and related problems.
Someone who works at a computer for eight hours a day should be aware of the risks, and take precaution against injury. Hands and wrists are the first and most obvious parts of the body that can be affected by RSI. For immediate relief, use mouse pads or wrist rests which will help alleviate tension and strain. Similarly, ergonomically designed hand guards can be worn to support and elevate the wrists while using a keyboard or mouse. For those already suffering from RSI problems, hand guards will help to relieve some pain.
Ergonomically manufactured computer keyboards will allow the user to change posture regularly and provide freedom to move hands into comfortable positions. Look for keyboards that promote relaxed body movement particularly in the hand and wrist area. For those who have already purchased a standard keyboard, consider an adjustable keyboard and arm tray that can be fitted to a computer desk. These trays allow the user to find comfortable levels for hands, wrists, arms and shoulders.
If you feel some pain or strain in your back, try to elevate your feet. Using a footrest will help to relieve some stress off your back. Try to use basic footrests that will raise your feet from the ground. Also available on the market are footrests which can rock back and forth, and these rests will allow your body to continually adjust itself, thereby reducing tension, stress and ultimately preventing RSI.
Adopting an ergonomic way of thinking will help provide a healthy and safe working environment for yourself and those around you. It is unhealthy to stay in one position for a long time, and even worse to stay static while tense. Taking regular short breaks and using stretching and breathing exercises will help relieve stress and tension on the body. Find numerous helpful instructions for computer users on the internet.
Ergonomics comprises many influencing factors including equipment and furniture design, accessories and physical health. Taking small preventative measures to avoid future RSI problems will ensure a healthy, safe environment and lead to more productivity at work. The benefits of ergonomic education within the workforce will help to provide a better working environment and happier, healthier workers.
