Green gadgets, what do they mean to you?
Some people only realise how dependant they are on electricity when there are countrywide power cuts. Currently in South Africa, the population is experiencing national power shortages that have led to a new “load shedding” exercise. Load sharing is “switching off” power to selected areas within South Africa during pre-selected times. Having no power at work or at home has opened many people’s eyes to alternative power generating methods. In this article, we comment on an article by Brad Linder: 8 Coolest green gadgets
For South Africans currently going through power cuts, alternative power is an attractive option. Would it not be handy to charge your cell phone or MP3 player with a solar panel? South Africa has plenty of sun, and think of the power saving around the nation. Cell phones are used in abundance in South Africa and across the African continent, due to a lack of telecommunication infrastructure in remote areas. To charge your cell phone or MP3 player, try using the Solio Hybrid 1000 (a portable solar panel) or try Brunton’s Solar Roll. Bruntons’ Solar Roll, developed for camping and photographers, is a waterproof roll that is able to charge your camera and laptop.
Who would have thought of a charger for your cell phone that operates by being hand-cranked? Sounds odd, but that would be a great gadget to have in my possession here is South Africa, right now. A few minutes of hand cranking provides enough battery life for your cell phone for up to 30 minutes. Now this might not be a handy device to carry around with you. So, what makes us think that a hand–cranking device would be of any use? Well, for those interested in reducing power bills, or for those annoying “load sharing times”, this gadget would be very useful.
A company called DIY Kyoto has developed a transmitter called a Wattson01. This little device is plugged into your fuse box and tells you how much electricity is used in your home. The Wattson01 is like a little meter, telling you when to stop or at least slow down electrical use. This is a useful piece of equipment, as it allows the consumer to monitor power use. Another handy little device to help you save on electricity bills is the Ecostrip. Use a USB cable to connect your computer to the Ecostrip, and when you shut down your computer, the Ecostrip will ensure everything is turned off, including printers, scanners and speakers.
For those who are interested in power saving or alternative methods of power, use these handy gadgets to create your own world of alternative power. Certainly alternative power is much in demand in South Africa right now, but there are people around the world who are interested in power saving, money saving and ultimately, planet saving technology.
