| GREEN FUEL FOR EUROPE - NO FOOD FOR SA |
19 November 2007 |
| GREEN FUEL FOR EUROPE - NO FOOD FOR SA The Eastern Cape is the latest target in Europe's quest for greener energy. In a story titled: "Biofuels plant planned for ELIDZ" (Wednesday 14 November) the Daily Dispatch outlined this planned "development" that shows the high price tag South Africans will have to pay. Before the German firm involved will even come to the proverbial table, South Africa must "invest" R1,5 billion. Not small change. But what will be a huge change is the enormous impact this industry will have on food security for South Africa as a whole. This is where South Africans will end up literally paying through their teeth. The company that intends to "invest" in the East Cape biofuels plant is described only as a "mystery German company". Hasn't South Africa had enough of secrets after the Coega and arms deal debacles? The provincial Department of Agriculture and East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) said "the final investment decision was stalled by a lack of government funding to plant crops to feed the biofuel plant". Biofuel production is one of the projects of the Eastern Cape's Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative of South Africa (AsgiSA). The plan is to farm canola as a monoculture over vast areas of the former Transkei farmlands, convert the canola into fuel and sell this to the European Union. Voila! Green fuel for Europe - and no food for SA. 500 000 hectares of farm land in the former Transkei is being eyed to grow canola and sugarbeets - once again, not for food, for fuel. The amazing fact is that the deal has stalled - not over a concern on the part of government over being able to grow enough food for people in the Eastern Cape - but that they do not have the money to invest in the "biofuels plan". According to Agriculture MEC Gugile Nkwinti, biofuels are important because: "We are dependent on the Middle East for fuel security. It becomes important now to produce our own fuel." Yet this "biofuel" will be exported to Europe so that Europe will have fuel security, but South Africa will have neither food nor fuel. Europe and the US have been looking for greener energy alternatives and have targeted third world countries in Africa and South America to grow biofuels. Vast areas of land that could be growing food for local people is instead feeding those hungry 4x4s. What the article also fails to mention is that these monocultures are usually based on a genetically modified (GM) seed - either canola or maize - sold at great expense by the pesticide companies such as Monsanto that manufacture them as part of a package deal that includes the further pesticides they require. These crops also require large-scale irrigation - which would place a heavy demand on South Africa's already stressed water resources. Water and energy resources needed by food farmers would be diverted to this vast project. A large photograph of Transkei farmlands near Lusikisiki in the Daily Dispatch bears the caption "Green future" and states that "specialized crops" will feed the biofuel plant in East London. But unfortunately the only future that will be green is that of the "mystery" companies from Europe who benefit from an alternative energy source. South Africans on the other hand will be left without farmland to grow food that is desperately needed by local people, without water or energy resources that will be diverted into this industry and suffering the effects of poisonous pesticides sprayed over vast areas of land for the genetically modified crops that interfere with indigenous ecology. "Biofuels" are truly only greener on the other side of the fence. If the South African government is concerned with "alleviating poverty" and "uplifting the poor" they will focus on food security for South Africans and support local farmers before selling out to "mystery" companies from overseas. Yours sincerely INGELA RICHARDSON |

| VS 2008 Compatibility with Older VS 2005 Add-in Packages |
28 November 2007 |
| I've helped a few people over the last week who have run into issues with VS 2008 where it would immediately crash when the IDE was launched, or upon creating new projects (usually failing with a "Visual Studio has encountered an unexpected error" dialog). After debugging the issues, it turned out that they were caused by an older VS 2005 add-in that people had installed on their machines that wasn't compatible with VS 2008. In each of these specific cases it was an older version of the VisualSVN source control utility (note: Version 1.3.1 of VisualSVN works fine with VS 2008 - but older versions have problems). By default when you install VS 2008 on a machine that has VS 2005 on it, setup will use your existing settings to configure VS 2008, and will import your current VS 2005 preferences and add-in packages. If you see any crashes or issues (especially upon first launching the IDE) it could be that they are caused by one of your older add-in packages having some compatibility issue with VS 2008. If you run into a situation like this, one option to try is to launch VS 2008 in "safemode". This will launch the IDE with add-in packages disabled, and provides you with a good way to determine whether it might be an add-in causing the problem. You can launch VS 2008 in safemode by passing the /safemode switch to the VS 2008 devenv process from the command-line: If you discover that the problem you encountered is related to an add-in, you can use the Tools->Add-In Manager menu option to disable the add-in within the IDE. As a general best practice, I'd recommend that you always keep close track of the add-ins you have installed with Visual Studio, and make sure to periodically check for updates of them (especially when upgrading to VS 2008). If you do ever report an issue with VS - please also make sure to detail the add-in packages you have installed, as this can help a lot in our investigations. Hope this helps, Scott P.S. Ilya Ryzhenkov from JetBrains recently published a blog post that details the plans to update the popular ReSharper add-in for VS 2008. You can read it here. |
